The skin barrier — principally the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer responsible for retaining water and keeping irritants out. When it is compromised, skin can feel tight, sting on application, flush easily, or react to products that were previously tolerated.
Over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, layering too many actives, environmental stress and certain medical conditions can all weaken the barrier. The signs include persistent dryness, redness, sensitivity, and a dull or rough texture.
Ceramides replenish the lipid matrix between corneocytes. Cholesterol and fatty acids round out the “mortar” that holds the barrier together. Niacinamide supports natural lipid production and reduces redness. Panthenol and hyaluronic acid support hydration. Centella asiatica and madecassoside calm reactive skin.
Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Apply a hydrating serum to damp skin, then a barrier-supportive moisturiser. Temporarily pause retinoids and acids. Use broad-spectrum SPF daily. Most barriers recover within two to four weeks of consistent care.
Ongoing redness, burning or breakouts that don’t resolve with barrier care may indicate rosacea, perioral dermatitis or another condition that benefits from a clinical assessment.
